About me

I’m Ethan Meitz, a mechanical engineering PhD student at Carnegie Mellon University and a DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellow. I work with Alan McGaughey and Gerald Wang, and expect to finish my PhD in Spring 2027.

Computation is the thread running through my work. I enjoy moving between the physics of materials, the details of a programming language, and the realities of a supercomputer.

I’m looking for AI-for-science research opportunities with ambitious scientific questions and the resources to pursue them.

I grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and studied mechanical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis before coming to Carnegie Mellon. Away from research, I draw, play drums, and build things.

Service & community

AmeriCorps & Habitat for Humanity

In summer 2019, I served with AmeriCorps at Habitat for Humanity in St. Paul. As a construction volunteer facilitator, I led crews of 8–20 volunteers and homebuyers, taught safe tool use, and helped build affordable housing.

Teaching someone to use a tool for the first time was as meaningful as the construction itself. The experience shaped how I think about leadership, communication, and making unfamiliar work approachable.

Art, rhythm & making things

Art & Drumming

Drawing and painting give me an escape from science and computation and allow me to slow down and be creative.

At WashU, I played with CRASH, a service-oriented improvisational drumming group using buckets and metal objects. We performed on campus and in the community, and shared drumming with kids through after-school programs and other community events.

I also like tinkering with electronics and building physical things. Some of those experiments live alongside my older engineering projects in the archive.
